The Insolvency Chronicles, Part 1

Posted on September 16, 2008

My friends are really awesome. Over the past couple of days, I have received many concerned e-mails, phone calls, text messages, and Facebook wall posts asking me how I’ve been handling the chaos. Most of these messages have been generously accompanied by offers of alcohol. 🙂 Before I begin, I’d just like to let everyone know how much I appreciate all the lovin’.

I believe the below photo pretty much summarizes the week so far:

Stressful Day

What’s happening with the company and IT now? It’s a thrill ride that would have Hitchcock at the edge of his seat. Your guess is as good as mine.

In the meantime, we’re still officially “open for business”, so we have to maintain our tradition of “operational excellence”. Which I suppose means making sure that nothing breaks while the fate of the firm is weighed in the balance. Besides shaping up our resumés, reminiscing about old times, cracking bitter jokes, and waiting for Judgement Day, it’s all we can do, really.

Walking the corridors feels a bit surreal – it’s still hard to accept that only a few days ago, we were a globally renowned Wall Street firm. A troubled firm, but one with a future nonetheless – if you had told me a few months ago I would be in the middle of the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history, I would have called you a liar, the Bear Stearns fiasco aside.

But I suppose we should get used to news like this…the Federal Reserve practically nationalized troubled insurer AIG today for a cool $85 billion. All this money flying back and forth to save sinking companies on The Street – things are probably going to get much worse before they get better.

Meanwhile, I’d better save while I’m still lucky enough to be around.
